iPrimus Naked DSL FAQs

What is iPrimus NakedDSL? How does it work?
iPrimus NakedDSL allows you to connect to the Internet via an ADSL2+ service, without the need for a voice service on the line. You just need an ADSL2+ compatible modem and an active phone line leading into your residence. iPrimus can help you with both of these items!
Can I get iPrimus NakedDSL anywhere around Australia?
iPrimus NakedDSL is available in our DSLAM coverage areas. Click here to see if your area is covered.
Can I definitely get iPrimus NakedDSL if I’m in a coverage area?
If you have an existing ADSL2+ broadband connection with iPrimus, there is a good chance you will be able to transfer to iPrimus NakedDSL.
To be eligible:
  • Your phone line must be able to be ported to iPrimus
  • Your phone line must be able to hold an ADSL2+ connection in terms of factors such as noise levels, interference and cable length (we will check this for you)
  • You must not have any complex products which stop the service from being provisioned
What would prevent me from receiving a NakedDSL service from iPrimus?
  • Being outside the iPrimus ADSL2+ coverage area
  • Having incompatible phone infrastructure, such as pair gain / RIM equipment
  • Needing a landline service (i.e. in order to maintain EFTPOS and merchant banking facilities, a fax machine or an alarm system)
  • Having other incompatible services (i.e. a fax stream duet, ISDN or PABX)
I live some distance from the exchange, so iPrimus has not been able to supply me with ADSL in the past. Can I still apply for iPrimus NakedDSL?
You are more than welcome to apply for the service, but as NakedDSL operates on the same distance limitations as ADSL, we regret that your application is unlikely to be successful unless there have been recent upgrades to your exchange.
Do you have any business grade NakedDSL plans?
Yes we do - please contact our business sales department for more information.
How fast is iPrimus NakedDSL?
iPrimus offers ADSL2+ NakedDSL plans. Of course, actual speeds vary depending on many factors beyond our control such as you location and equipment, the source of your downloads and level of internet traffic.
With NakedDSL will I still need a phone line?
You will still require the copper wire that runs from the exchange to your house. NakedDSL simply switches off the voice capabilities that usually run over your telephone line.
What if I want to connect a telephone or voice service again?
You will need to cancel your NakedDSL service, and reconnect your voice service. Please be aware that cancellation and reconnection fees may apply.
Will a fax machine work on a NakedDSL service?
Fax machines need a dial-tone to operate, and will NOT work on NakedDSL. We recommend that you do not apply for a NakedDSL service if you require the use of a fax.
How will I know if I can get iPrimus NakedDSL?
You can perform a preliminary check online or contact our sales team on 131 789. They will run through a line qualification check for you, and inform you whether the service is available.
Is the Customer Service Guarantee (CSG) applicable on this service?
No. The CSG only applies to telephone lines with an active voice service.
Can I use a backup dial-up connection if my NakedDSL goes down?
No – in order to use a dial-up service, you need to have a dial-tone on your telephone line which NakedDSL does not provide. You can still access your iPrimus email via our webmail tool from any live Internet connection via http://webmail.iprimus.com.au/.
I’ve just received my appointment date! Will my NakedDSL service definitely be set up at this time?
A cutover at the exchange needs to be performed by an exchange technician. On some rare occasions, the technician will not be able to conduct the work at the specified time and date. We will notify you if this is the case.
Why do I still hear a dial tone on my phone line?
Some customers may hear a dial-tone on their NakedDSL service. This allows calls to be made to limited numbers, including Emergency Services (000) and iPrimus Customer service. Other outgoing calls and incoming calls will not work. Whether you have a dial-tone or not will not affect the NakedDSL service itself.
How long does it take to get connected? Will I lose my Internet connection at all?
That depends on how your line is currently set up. If your current Broadband service is connected via ULL with another provider, your general lead time is between 5 and 18 days. Delays can occur, due to appointment rescheduling or exchange issues. If you are connected via SSS with another provider the standard timeframe for connection is up to 20 working days. This is because your line needs to be migrated to ULL before the service can be activated.
Do uploads count towards my monthly data allowance?
Yes, iPrimus NakedDSL plans count both uploads and downloads.
Can I view how much data I have used?
Certainly – you can view your data usage in your Account Toolbox. This data is updated every 24-28 hours. You can also top your account up with more data if needed.
Will iPrimus VoiP traffic be counted towards my data allowance?
No. Your iPrimus VoIP traffic is unmetered, which means it’s not counted towards your data allowance and will not be affected if your connection is speed limited (i.e. iPrimus VoIP will always run at full speed).
What traffic does not count towards my data allowance?
Anything that is listed as unmetered traffic on the iPrimus unmetered web site.
Do I need a new modem when moving to NakedDSL?
This depends on the modem you currently have. If your modem is capable of supporting ADSL2+ it may be suitable. However some modems which are over 12-months old may not be able to support ADSL2+ in which case you will need to purchase a new modem. For the very best performance, we recommend that you purchase an iPrimus Home Hub. If you signup for an iPrimus VoIP service, you will need either a VoIP enabled modem such as the iPrimus Home Hub, or a separate ATA.
Why have I got a voice connection during the provisioning process?
If your telephone service is with another provider, it will need to be transferred to iPrimus as part of the provisioning process. You must pay line rental on a pro rata basis and any call charges accrued until your iPrimus NakedDSL service is connected at the standard rates applicable to the iPrimus Value Home Phone Plan (click here for rates). Your home phone will automatically be cancelled after the NakedDSL conversion is completed. If you cancel your phone service first, the NakedDSL conversion will fail.
How can I pay for this plan?
Via direct debit from a credit card or nominated bank account.
What happens if I reach my data allowance limit?
The connection will be reduced to dial-up speed for the remainder of your billing month. Please note this reduction in speed will not affect the quality of iPrimus VoIP calls made from your service.
Are iPrimus NakedDSL plans available without minimum contract terms?
iPrimus NakedDSL plans are available on 12 or 24 month contracts.
What happens to my current phone number?
Currently, if you move to iPrimus NakedDSL, your existing home phone number will be lost. Future processes may allow you to port the number to a VoIP service.
What is VoIP?
VoIP stands for “Voice over Internet Protocol.” It is an alternative way of making and receiving phone calls over a broadband Internet connection. VoIP offers consumers the benefit of calling locally, long distance and internationally for less money. VoIP FAQs can be found here.
Does the “Customer Service Guarantee” (CSG) apply to iPrimus VoIP services?
In consideration of the inherent limitations of VoIP, we require you to waive your rights under the CSG, to the extent that the CSG is applicable to a VoIP service.
Can I use iPrimus VoIP with my own ATA?
Unfortunately no, since the iPrimus VoIP ATAs come pre-configured for your specific account.
